1. Baghdad Torn Apart by Iraqi Forces and ISIS, Death Toll Climbs to 120

Even in the holy month of Ramzan, a bomb explosion in Baghdad killed more than 120 people – the third attack carried out by ISIS in three countries in the last week.

The paradox lies in the fact that as Iraqi forces – backed by American air strikes – attack ISIS and gain territories back, “the group reverts to its roots as a guerrilla insurgency”, The Telegraph reported.

But according to terrorism researchers, attacks could happen all year long and it is difficult to tell what role a month plays for ISIS.

2. PM Modi to Reshuffle Cabinet on 5 July

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will reshuffle his cabinet on 5 July, NDTV reported.

Sources told NDTV that new ministers may be put in posts that are currently occupied by senior ministers.

After conducting a review of each and every department for over five hours on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said the best performing ministries were the Power Ministry headed by Piyush Goyal, and Roads and Highways Ministry which is led by Nitin Gadkari.

3. Differently Abled People Entitled to 3 Percent Reservation in Promotion for Govt Jobs: SC

Differently abled people will now be entitled to 3 percent reservation in promotion for government jobs, the Supreme Court has ruled.

The basis for providing reservation for PWD is physical disability and not any of the criteria forbidden under Article 16(1). Therefore, the rule of no reservation in promotions as laid down in Indra Sawhney has no application to the PWD.

According to The Hindustan Times, the SC said that the objective behind such a ruling was to integrate PWD people into the society along with ensuring their economic progress.

5. Rajnath Singh Speeds Up Probes Against IPS Officers

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has sped up investigations on decade-old pending cases related to disproportionate assets and corruption that were registered against IPS officers , The Hindu reported.

This decision may affect several high-profile officers such as DGP K Nagraj, who not only has a pending case against him in CBI, but was also accused of corruption by Tripura CM Manik Sarkar himself.

Other officers facing MHA enquiry are IPS officer A Sudhakar Rao, who was booked by the CBI for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 5 lakh, Himachal Pradesh cadre officer RK Singh, who took voluntary retirement in 2009, and Madhya Pradesh cadre officer RN Pandey, who is now retired.

6. Monsoon Fury: Almost 40 Feared Dead in Uttarakhand, Tripura Faces Fuel Crisis

At least 40 people were feared dead in Uttarakhand following a cloudburst over the weekend, The Hindustan Times reported.

Tripura too faced a severe fuel crisis, having been cut off from the entire country for almost 45 days due to the heavy rains.

With the Assam-Agartala National Highway blocked because of the rain, thousands of oil tankers and trucks are stranded and damaged, leading the Tripura government to impose fuel rationing.

There were reports of some fuel pumps selling petrol in black for over Rs 200 a litre. According to the fuel rationing system, at one go, two-wheelers will be given only Rs 200 worth of petrol; auto-rickshaws Rs 300 worth of petrol and Rs 500 worth of fuel for cars.

7. DU Second Cut-Off List to Be Declared, Big Dip in Percentage Not Likely

The second list of cut-offs for colleges under the Delhi University will be released on Monday, although principals of popular colleges have warned against expectations of a big dip, The Hindustan Times reported.

8. Udta Haryana: On Average, Govt Rehabilitates 20 Youths Under 25 Daily

On average, at least 20 people mostly aged below 25 arrive at rehab centres in Haryana for de-addiction treatments, Times of India reported.

Dr Brahamdeep Sindhu, who is a psychiatrist at the Gurgaon centre told TOI that he received 30-40 addicts under 35 years of age everyday.

9. Sangam Vihar’s Severe Water Crisis Leaves its Residents Struggling For Every Single Drop

Around five lakh people live in South Delhi’s Sangam Vihar, yet not a single household has any access to piped water supply.

Although Delhi Jal Board, in December, flagged off a Rs 90 crore project for installing pipelines for internal water distribution, the work is yet to start.

A resident from Sangam Vihar who has been facing the hardship of the water crisis in the area told The Indian Express:

My father had died and my mind was occupied with storing water. I left my father’s body and asked my wife and children to immediately go and fill our tanks because if we did not go, a week’s water supply would have gone.

Residents said that the timing of the arrival of the tankers fluctuates, forcing them to be alert.
