1. Ramjas College Drops Umar Khalid’s Talk After Violent ABVP Protest
Delhi University’s Ramjas College cancelled the ‘Cultures of Protest’ seminar after members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad protested against the participation of Jawaharlal Nehru University students, Umar Khalid and Shehla Rashid Shora.
Khalid, who was at the helm of the “nationalism” controversy erupting out of JNU last year, had been invited to speak on Tuesday.
The police had allegedly warned the organisers that they would not be able to provide protection to those attending the seminar, in light of protests by the student party.
Speaking to The Quint, Khalid said he was on his way to Delhi University when he received a call from the organisers.

2. I-T Dept to Crack Whip on Those Failing to Verify Cash Deposits Over Rs 5 Lakh
The Central Board of Direct Taxes has decided to crack the whip on those who fail to verify cash deposits of Rs 5 lakh or more during the demonetisation drive, while deciding to go easy on "low-risk cases".
It has also asked officers to act against those who have offered or repaid loans in cash, which attract 100 percent penalty.
Under the law, no loans can be advanced in cash, even to friends, and cannot be repaid in cash.
With a majority of the 18 lakh who had deposited more than Rs 5 lakh cash into their bank accounts failing to electronically verify the funds, the tax department has been forced to push the cases to its field officers but with a clear message that the entire process should be electronic and non-intrusive.

3. CJI Rules on Plea by Kalikho Pul's Wife to Probe Suicide Note
Chief Justice of India JS Khehar passed an order late on Tuesday on a letter addressed to him by Dangwimsai Pul, the wife of former Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Kalikho Pul, who has demanded the registration of an FIR and investigation into a note attributed to her husband who allegedly committed suicide on 9 August last year.
In the 60-page note in Hindi, Pul purportedly writes about his commitment to probity and alleges corruption by a range of public figures. His allegations name former and serving Supreme Court judges, senior law officers, politicians and other persons holding high office.
One of the charges made in the note is that relatives of two judges had, via some individuals, indicated that they wanted money from Pul in exchange for ensuring that President’s rule in Arunachal would not be declared illegal.

4. Under-17 World Cup: Delhi Likely to Miss Marquee Matches as FIFA Keeps Eye on Post-Diwali Air
Delhi is likely to miss out on the opportunity of hosting the marquee matches of the prestigious FIFA Under-17 World Cup later this year following the football federation’s concerns over the “extremely high” pollution levels in the city after Diwali.
With the tournament scheduled to be held from 6-28 October, the all-important knock-out games will be held after Diwali, which falls on 19 October this year.
So these matches are expected to be held at the other five venues – Navi Mumbai, Margao, Kochi, Guwahati and Kolkata.
The tournament director for the local organising committee, Javier Ceppi, said they have studied the capital’s air quality statistics for the “last six to seven years”.
The match schedule is not finalised yet. One of the reasons for that is the pollution. And pollution in Delhi is a serious concern… particularly after Diwali. We all know this.

5. PM Modi Discusses H-1B Curbs With US Congress Members
PM Narendra Modi has urged the US to take a "reflective, balanced and far-sighted" perspective on the movement of skilled professionals, indicating India's discomfort with the Trump administration's intent to curb H-1B visas.
The PM raised the issue during his interaction with US Congress members on Tuesday and he suggested that restrictions on professionals would be an unwelcome step.
The PM said Indian professionals contributed to the US economy and were law-abiding and socially integrated residents, a statement that underlines that H-1B visas are not a one-way street where only the visitors benefit.

6. Hauz Khas Rape: Accused Stayed in Parks for 2 Days Before Cops Traced Him
The 20-year-old man who allegedly raped a 24-year-old woman inside Deer Park near Hauz Khas Village, did not return to his house in South Delhi’s Arjun Nagar after committing the crime on Sunday. Instead, he shuttled from one park to another located in the neighbourhood. He was arrested by Delhi Police on Tuesday.

The accused, a native of Dholpur in Rajasthan, would earn his living by doing odd jobs at pubs and restaurants in Hauz Khas Village.
On a day he could not find any work, he just loitered in the area or hung out with friends. He knew the Deer Park area well and that helped him find a spot where he allegedly committed the crime with no one around to come to the help of the victim.

7. Corbett Gets Nod to Kill Poachers
The Corbett Tiger Reserve (CTR) on Tuesday issued shoot-at-sight orders against poachers. But the orders were to be carried out only for “self-protection against poachers carrying arms,” CTR director Parag Madhukar Dhakate said.
A five-day anti-poaching operation was initiated following intelligence information about the suspected movement of poachers.
According to the tiger census data released in 2015, Uttarakhand, with 340 tigers, has the second highest tiger population in the country after Karnataka. According to wildlife experts, the tiger population has gone up in the past two years.
We received some inputs from the intelligence agencies following which we have started an anti-poaching operation... forest workers have been ordered to instantly shoot any poacher or hunter seen with arms in the core critical tiger habitat zone.

8. No Sign Of Apex Maritime Security Body, 9 Years After 26/11
The government is yet to get cracking on a national maritime authority (NMA), which was strongly recommended after the 26/11 terror strikes in 2008 and promised by the NDA government soon after it came to power in 2014, even as Phase-II of the coastal surveillance network (CSN) was finally approved on Tuesday.
The defence acquisitions council, chaired by defence minister Manohar Parrikar, accorded the initial nod or “acceptance of necessity” to the Rs 803 crore project for Phase-II of the CSN.
This involves setting up 38 more radar stations with static radars and electro-optic sensors, four mobile surveillance stations and integration Vessel Traffic Management System sites in the Gulfs of Kutch and Khambat.
This follows Phase-I at a cost of Rs 600 crore, under which 36 radar stations on the mainland, six in Lakshadweep and Minicoy and four in Andaman and Nicobar are now operational after several delays.
The overall progress on revamping the country's entire coastal security architecture has been excruciatingly slow.

9. Airforce Sergeant Murders Colleague, Hides Chopped-Up Body in Polythene Bags
Police recovered the chopped-up body of a missing airforce employee from the residential quarters of a sergeant in the Bhisiana airforce station on Tuesday.
The pieces of the body of Vipin Shukla, a corporal in the Air Force Wives Welfare Association Canteen, were found stuffed in 16 polythene bags and hidden in different parts of the accused’s quarters.
The accused, Sulesh Kumar, and his wife Anuradha have been arrested, while Kumar’s brother-in-law Shashi Bhushan, who worked in the Merchant Navy, is absconding.
Twenty-seven-year-old Shukla, a resident of Gonda in Uttar Pradesh, joined the airforce in 2009 and was posted at the Bhisiana airforce station in May 2014. He reportedly went missing on 8 February.
