Phadnis, who has already filed a petition in the Supreme Court demanding reopening of the Gandhi assassination case, will be launching an online petition with the White House on October 2 to demand declassification of the third telegram sent by the American diplomat Herbert “Tom” Reiner. Reiner was among those present in the compound of Birla House (now Gandhi Smriti) in New Delhi when the father of the nation was assassinated on January 30, 1948. Reiner, a vice-consul attached to the US embassy, was the one who caught hold of the assassin Nathuram Godse. Reiner later sent three telegrams to the US government stating the sequence of events at the site of the incident and other details about the assassination as well as the day’s developments. “Out of these three telegrams, two were declassified by the US authorities but one is yet to be declassified. This is the telegram which has details of the happenings of that day. This is crucial for us, but the US government has classified it. I want the US authorities to declassify it so that the truth comes out,” said Phadnis while talking to Mirror.
