On 2nd December 2014, 45-year-old Stanley Stephen was going to drop his daughter, when his Suzuki Swift hit a Maruti Esteem.
Neither car was damaged, but the driver of the Esteem got into an argument with him, after which he allegedly pulled out an iron rod and hit Stephen, leaving him unconscious on the road.
That morning changed their lives forever, Stephen’s wife Leena recounts in this video.
Until last year, Stanley was an independent man who loved his job and his family. But after he was interned at a hospital bed, brutally battered by the driver of the car he accidentally ran into, life has not been the same for him and his family.
Initially Leena was hesitant to file any complaint, as she did not want more complications in her life. But her friends and family persuaded her to take action.
Leena says only an extraordinary person can deal with this situation. She struggles with finance, as from being a family of two earning individuals, they have now come down to one earning member.
She further recalls how much Stanley loved his job, and enjoyed talking to his customers. But now, all of a sudden, all that has been snatched away from him. Leena says, “They [perpetrators] were not frightened of anything, and knew they can escape this easily.”
She is still scared, and remains in constant fear of something untoward happening to her children. She thinks that this country is no more safe to live in, and urges people to move to a country where “the law is respected”. Her voice resonates with despair and a complete loss of faith in humanity as she says, “people love to be spectators and just enjoy or keep them selves away from such issues”.
