Tension gripped Varanasi on Tuesday, after the Allahabad High Court issued an order to ban immersion of Ganesha idols in the Ganga to prevent the river from getting polluted further.
Unhappy with the order, the devotees protested and were on a sit-in for 48 hours. The local police reached the spot to control the situation. But exasperated devotees got into a scuffle with the police and refused to vacate. The police baton-charged the protestors which left many injured.
