The nation observed the third death anniversary of Jyoti Singh today, victim of the horrific gangrape in Delhi, that shook the conscience of an entire nation.
On 16 December 2012, the 23-year-old physiotherapy intern was beaten and gangraped in a private bus in which she was travelling with a male friend from Munirka, a neighbourhood in south Delhi. She succumbed to injuries on 29 December the same year.
On 20 December this year, the juvenile convict in the case was released and sent to an NGO at an undisclosed destination. People from all walks of life gathered in various parts of the country to protest the release of the youngest convict as the Supreme Court rejected the plea to stop the release of the juvenile offender.
Days after the juvenile convict in the ghastly 2012 gangrape-cum-murder case walked free for lack of a legal provision, Parliament passed a bill stating that those aged 16 and above will now be tried as adults for heinous crimes like rape.
