Students of Kolkata’s prestigious Presidency University held the Vice Chancellor captive all through Friday night and Saturday afternoon. The incident occurred after some students were assaulted by the police during Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s visit to the campus on Friday.

A section of students were protesting during her visit, seeking punishment of the culprits of the university’s Baker Hall laboratory ransacking incident of April 2013. The students were not allowed to speak to her and were assaulted by the police in order to disperse them.

In retaliation the students gheraoed the office of the Vice Chancellor Anuradha Lohia, who was not allowed to leave the campus. She was allowed to leave only on Saturday afternoon, after an ordeal of more than 24 hours.
