Panaji Mayor Surendra Fortado went overboard while demonstrating mechanised weed removal from a boat in St Inez Cree.
Furtado had invited the media on Sunday to cover the activity off the creek. The vessel overturned shortly after the Mayor and other officials boarded it, throwing everyone on board the vessel into the creek water.
A social activist on Monday filed a police complaint against Furtado over the capsizing of the boat. Aires Rodrigues told police that the accident during a demonstration of a mechanised weeding operation occurred due to overloading.
The complaint read that Furtado and others boarded the vessel despite being warned not to do so. The complaint has been lodged under sections 280, 287, 304 (a) and 511 of the Indian Penal Code.
Furtado said the incident was “an accident”.
