“In Uttar Pradesh, the cow is mummy, but in the North-East, it’s yummy,” AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi said on Saturday, taking a jibe at the BJP over its "hypocrisy” on the issue of ‘cow protection’.
The Hyderabad MP’s remark is aimed at the BJP government’s crackdown on illegal and mechanised slaughterhouses in Uttar Pradesh.
It also comes a day after Gujarat passed a bill that could lead to life imprisonment for cow slaughter. “We have equalled killing of a cow or its progeny with the killing of a human being,” a Gujarat minister said.
Amid widespread criticism, the Yogi Adityanath-led UP government has said repeatedly that the crackdown is only aimed at illegal and mechanised slaughterhouses.
