1. Mumbai Plane Crash: 5 Dead, CM Fadnavis Visits Site in Ghatkopar

Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis visited the site in Ghatkopar, where a chartered plane crashed on Thursday, 28 June, killing four people on board and one pedestrian.

The DGCA confirmed that a pedestrian, as well as two pilots and two engineers on board the Beechcraft King Air C90 were killed.

The aircraft crashed while it was on a test flight.

2. Rahul Mocking Army: BJP, Cong Trade Barbs on Surgical Strike Video

After the footage of Indian Army's September 2016 surgical strike was released on 28 June, the Congress accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of using the counter-terror operation as a political tool to garner votes.

“Blood and sacrifice of brave soldiers cannot become a vote garnering tool for Modi government,” Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said at a press conference on 28 June.

Surjewala further said: “It is the soldiers who sacrifice their lives and it is Modi ji who was glorified.”

Responding to the Congress’ accusations, BJP leader and Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad addressed a press conference, saying that “Rahul Gandhi was insulting the country’s forces.”

3. Pak-Linked LeT Agents Plotted Shujaat Bukhari’s Murder: J&K Cops

The Jammu and Kashmir Police, in a press conference on Thursday, 28 June, said that they have “tangible evidence” to establish Lashkar-e-Taiba was behind the murder of veteran journalist Shujaat Bukhari, and that the conspiracy was hatched in Pakistan.

Bukhari, a prominent Kashmir journalist, was assassinated by three motorcycle-borne men on 14 June outside his office in Srinagar. Besides the scribe, two of his PSOs were killed when the assassins opened indiscriminate firing on them.

4. “I Did My Duty”: RTI Activist Behind Amit Shah-Note Ban Bank Story

Mumbai-based activist Manoranjan S Roy has sent both the ruling party and the opposition scrambling with his RTI seeking information on the exact amount of demonetised currency that had been collected by the various DCCBs in the country.

Roy's RTI revealed that the Ahmedabad District Central Cooperative Bank (DCCB), that had BJP chief Amit Shah as its director, collected the highest number of demonetised notes in the five-day period after note ban was announced on 8 November 2016.

Roy told The Quint about what compelled him to file the RTI and how his quest for the truth has left him scared for his life.

5. Rupee at All-Time Low, Breaches 69 Per Dollar Level For 1st Time

The Indian rupee fell to a lifetime low in trade as a confluence of factors ranging from a stronger dollar, to higher oil prices, a wider current account deficit and foreign portfolio outflows pushed the currency lower.

The rupee fell to 69.09 in intraday trade compared to Wednesday’s close of 68.63. The previous all-time intraday low for the rupee is 68.86 against the dollar—a level hit on 24 November 2016. The all-time closing low stands at 68.82, breached on 28 August, 2013.

So far this year, the Indian currency has weakened 8.1 percent, making it the worst performer in Asia.
