1. After Muzaffarpur Horror, 18 Missing from UP’s Deoria Girls’ Home

After the horrific Muzaffarpur shelter home rape case, another incident of an alleged flesh trade unfolded in Uttar Pradesh’s Deoria where at least 24 girls were rescued from a shelter home by the police, reported NDTV.

The couple, who owns and runs the ‘Maa Vindhyavasini’ shelter home, was also arrested after the police raided the home and found 18 of the 42 girl inmates missing.

2. No Natural Light in Arthur Road Jail: Are Mallya’s Claims True?

A consortium of Indian banks is fighting a case in London against the fugitive liquor baron Vijay Mallya in an effort to extradite him. During one the hearings in this case, the British court asked the Indian authorities to provide video footage of barrack number 12 of Arthur Road jail.

But Mallya has claimed that the condition of the Indian jail is not good; that it barely gets natural light, and keeping him in such conditions would be a violation of human rights.

3. Justice KM Joseph: SC Judges Meet CJI Over Seniority Snub

After months of delays and controversy, Justice KM Joseph will finally be sworn in as a judge of the Supreme Court on Tuesday, 7 August, along with Justices Indira Banerjee and Vineet Saran. However, the controversies have not ended, with fresh problems brewing over the order in which the three judges will be sworn in.

Justice Joseph is set to be sworn in last of the three, according to the Supreme Court circular – reportedly, this was the order specified by the government after notifying their appointments. As a result, the other two judges appointed on Tuesday will be senior to Justice KM Joseph according to the convention of seniority followed in the apex court.

4. Bangladesh Protests: Police Use Tear Gas, Block Internet Services

Police in Bangladesh's capital Dhaka fired tear gas and used batons on Saturday, 4 August, to disperse hundreds of protesting students angry over the traffic deaths of two fellow students, leaving many people injured.

The students had earlier blocked the roads in retaliation, only allowing emergency vehicles to pass through.

In light of the growing agitation, the government threatened to adopt even tougher measures if the protests turn “too disruptive”, reports Reuters.

5. SC Hearing on Pleas Challenging Article 35A Adjourned to 27 August

The Supreme Court, on 6 August, adjourned hearing on petitions challenging the validity of Article 35A, which guarantees special privileges to the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The matter will be taken up by a 3-judge bench in the week commencing 27 August to determine whether the matter is required to be referred to a 5-judge bench.

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir has been on edge after a two-day statewide shutdown was called from 5 August by separatist leaders Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik under the banner of the Joint Resistance Leadership.

6. Sukma Encounter: 15 Naxals Killed in Chhattisgarh, Weapons Found

Fifteen Naxals were killed and four were apprehended in a gun battle with security forces in Chhattisgarh's Sukma district, police said on 6 August, Monday.

DM Awasthi, Special DG, Anti-Naxal Operations, told ANI that seven country-made weapons have also been recovered from them.

The gun battle occurred when a joint team of Special Task Force of Chhattisgarh Police and the District Reserve Guard headed to Miltkatong area during the night of 5 August following information about the presence of the Maoists, a police officer told IANS.
