Former employees of the Kanpur Stock Exchange have written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting euthanasia for themselves as well as their families. The employees claim they are on the verge of starvation, after they were forcefully fired from their jobs in 2014.

More than 50 such employees allege that the higher management officials teamed up with brokers to unlawfully take over the institution. Even though the exchange was running on profits, the officials allegedly used illegal means to justify the sacking of employees.

According to SEBI rules, our jobs were forcefully taken away. We were not given any prior notice. When we opposed, they threatened to kill us and asked us to leave at gunpoint.

The sacked employees have reportedly written numerous times to higher authorities, including the finance ministry and offices of the President and the Prime Minister. All requests for investigation into the matter fell on deaf ears as not a single satisfactory reply was given.

We want the govt to take back all the employees. What happened with us was unlawful. We want justice.

In a bid to reach out to higher authorities, children of the employees also joined in, writing numerous time to ‘Modi Baba’, asking him to intervene for their parents’ sake.

This is not the first instance where unemployment and limited means have forced people to this extreme step. In September last year, an unemployed M.Phil and LLM degree holder from Bhopal demanded euthanasia. She was frustrated for not being able to find a job even after being highly qualified. In yet another instance, 50 Dalit farmers requested permission for euthanasia after their lands were allegedly grabbed by local goons in Sehore, Madhya Pradesh.
