Congress President Rahul Gandhi was detained by cops during a protest march to CBI HQ on Friday, 26 October. He was taken to the Lodhi Colony police station, accompanied by other Congress leaders.
The Congress staged a protest march from Dyal Singh College to CBI headquarters against CBI Director Alok Verma's being sent on a leave. The Opposition alleged Verma was sent on a forced leave to cover up the alleged Rafale scam.
The Supreme Court on Friday ordered that the inquiry by the CVC into Alok Verma and Rakesh Asthana needs to be completed in two weeks. The enquiry will be supervised by former Supreme Court judge AK Patnaik. The next hearing in the case will be held on 12 November, after the SC reopens after Diwali.
Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Wednesday, 24 October, said the decision to send Director Alok Verma and Special Director Rakesh Asthana on leave was an interim order, to facilitate a fair probe in the case, which will be undertaken by a Special Investigation Team (SIT).
SC has further strengthened the fairness criterion. They fixed a time limit, that this must be over in two weeks. And in order to ensure that highest standard of fairness are maintained even in the inquiry they have appointed a retired judge to ensure that the CVC inquiry is extremely fair.Arun Jaitely, Finance Minister
