1. SC Refuses to Stay Indu Malhotra’s Appointment as Top Court Judge

The Supreme Court rebuked lawyers who wanted a stay on warrant of appointment of Senior Advocate Indu Malhotra as judge of apex court on Thursday, 26 April, stating that it was against “constitutional propriety”.

The apex court refused to stay the appointment of Justice Malhotra on the ground that the Centre has stalled the appointment of Uttarakhand Chief Justice KM Joseph. Just minutes later, Justice Malhotra was appointed as an SC judge.

Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra said it was "unthinkable, unimaginable, inconceivable" to stay the Presidential warrant for appointment of Malhotra as SC judge.

2. PM Modi Attacks Cong for ‘Lollipop Politics’ Ahead of K’taka Visit

Speaking with candidates, office-bearers and elected representatives of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Karnataka wing, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, 26 April, attacked the Opposition for “indulging in lollipop politics of caste and religion”.

Modi’s message was broadcast via the Narendra Modi app, his YouTube channel and news agency ANI. As Karnataka is set to go to polls, PM Modi will be travelling to Udupi on 1 May, where he will be visiting the Shri Krishna Mutt, and will later address a massive public rally. Reports suggest the PM is likely to campaign for 6 days in the poll-bound state.

Karnataka will go to polls on 12 May and the results are expected on 15 May.

3. After SC Verdict, What Do Caravan Reporters Say on Loya’s Death?

The death of a judge, several versions of the truth, and then, an abrupt end.

Three years after it was reported that special CBI judge Brijgopal Harkrishan Loya had died of a “cardiac arrest” in 2014, The Caravan magazine published an article quoting family members of the judge as alleging foul play in his death.

The Quint spoke to Niranjan Takle, Anosh Malekar, Atul Dev and Nikita Saxena – the reporters who have been on the case. All four reiterated that they stood by their stories no matter the verdict.

4. Haryana Cancels CWG Event After Athletes Protest Cut in Rewards

The Haryana government cancelled the felicitation function for the state's Commonwealth Games medal winners after being threatened with a boycott by top athletes such as wrestler Vinesh Phogat and javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra over a proposed cut in prize money.

The function was to be held in Panchkula on Thursday, 26 April, but athletes including Phogat, Chopra and boxer Manoj Kumar refused to attend it, after the state government suggested it may reduce the prize money for athletes employed with units like the Railways and Services.

The Haryana government suggested that they deduct the prize money that the athletes get from their employer, in case of any, from the total reward money. The move is an attempt to ensure that two gold medallists or two silver medallists from the same state do not get different rewards.
