The cries of migratory birds that accompany the advent of winter in Kashmir is a welcome sound. They signal the summer’s end, the coming of the winter and the ecological importance of this region for species arriving from as far as northern Europe and Japan.
Wildlife experts say, they have never seen as few migratory birds – or for that matter so few species – as this year. Birds like the whooper swan, stiff-tailed duck and cotton teal have already disappeared from the landscape.
