Delhi Law Minister Jitendra Singh Tomar was today arrested in the alleged fake degree case.
Police arrested the Aam Aadmi Party leader from his house this morning and took him to Vasant Vihar police station for further questioning.
Police sources said he has been arrested in the alleged fake degree case. An FIR was registered against him last night.
He has been charged under various IPC sections including 420 (cheating).
A police team had gone to Bihar on the direction of court to investigate charges that he had used fake degrees.
However, the department is unaware of the arrest, the Delhi Police chief was quoted as saying in a CNN-IBN report.
Tomar was in the eye of the storm after an RTI inquiry revealed that his undergraduate degree was fake.
Reacting to the sudden arrest former Aam Aadmi Party leader Yogendra Yadav tweeted that if the degree of Tomar is genuine, AAP should make it public rather than hiding behind court procedures.
The reports of arrest have sparked an uproar against the Modi government with many calling the arrest an attempt by BJP to destabilise the AAP government.
Delhi police officials slapped Tomar when he was in their custody and tried to force him to sign some papers.

AAP spokesperson Sanjay Singh said the arrest was unnecessary as Jitender’s case is still pending in High Court. He accused the Centre of using ‘pressure tactics’ against the Delhi government. Watch Sanjay Singh’s reaction to the arrest of the minister.
Meanwhile, BJP leader Nupur Sharma said that it was all a ‘drama’ by AAP and it was not sure whether Tomar had been arrested or just detained.
We don’t really know if he has been arrested or detained. The AAP is just playing on emotions and doing drama.
—Nupur Sharma, BJP Leader
Former Union Law Minister and Congress leader Veerappa Moily said it was strange that the law minister is a person who had the faced the prospect of arrest on cheating charges. “Law should take its course,” he said.
