Could not get into an IIT, that sacred establishment where ‘Sharmaji ka beta’ studies? No worries, you could soon be watching an IIT lecture from the comfort of your home. The HRD Ministry is all set to launch 32 Direct-to-Home channels, through which students across the country would soon be able to watch live telecast of lectures from six IITs and other top institutions.
The Department of State has agreed to allot two transponders on a GSAT series satellite for the project.
The six IITs include Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi, Kharagpur, Kanpur and Guwahati. Space technology will be used to transmit the lectures from 10 ‘Teaching Ends’.
Lectures from over a dozen other premier institutions are being finalised upon, and sources say the channels will be on air in a few months’ time. These channels will be freely available on Doordarshan’s FreeDish DTH platform and all that the students will need is a Set Top Box to receive them.
