India has welcomed the latest initiative of Uber – the US-based taxi app service –UberFauji. It’s the Indian rendition of the programme Uber Military, which was launched by Uber in the United States. The Army Welfare Placement Organization (APWO), which has around 100,000 ex-servicemen registered under it, has partnered with Uber to create opportunities for ex-servicemen.

After having faced severe scrutiny for its poorly monitored security for female commuters, this initiative can come as a welcome move for Indians.

Ex-servicemen are dependable and disciplined. What can be more reassuring for customers than a voice on the other end of the phone greeting them with a Jai Hind.

Major General Deepak Sapra Head, AWPO to Hindustan Times

With the help of a vehicle funding scheme provided by Uber, an eligible ex-serviceman will not only be able to ride a car, but also own it at a meagre sum of Rs 30,000 once they have partnered with Uber. The EMI will be deducted from their salaries over a period of three years.

At Uber, we understand that members of our armed forces are some of the nation’s most talented, committed and skilled people. It is our honour to provide access to opportunities and empowerment on the Uber platform.

Amit Jain, President Uber, India to Hindustan Times

On Independence Day, UberFAUJI released a video to pay tribute to the service of ex-army men.
