There are over 7 billion mobile connections across the globe today, and this figure is expected to grow to approximately 8.7 billion by the end of 2018.

Keeping that statistics in mind, it won’t be difficult to predict that mobile technology will play a significant role in education in the future.

Qualcomm and Sesame Workshop India have recently come together with an initiative called Play ‘n’ Learn. The initiative is aimed at helping schoolchildren learn with the aid of technology.

We spoke with Monalisa Sahoo, Senior Director of Marketing at Qualcomm India & South Asia, one of the largest chip-makers for smartphones, and Sashwati Banerjee, Managing Director, Sesame Workshop India, a key player in the Early Childhood Development space and the organisation behind the popular show Galli Galli Sim Sim about the project.

D-Link’s Internet Of Things products can be controlled via an App.(Photo: D-Link)

George Jetson or Tony Stark? Rosie the robotic maid or J.A.R.V.I.S the sentient AI system from the Marvel universe? No matter which vision of the hyper-connected future you subscribe to, one thing is clear – smart home tech is here and now, and you no longer need a home-automation geek to get going!

Tushar Kanwar picks out some of the best smart home solutions to get you started.

He says that D-Link’s taking the contrarian approach to the smart home market with their Connected Home Solution, in that you can piece components of your smart home together bit by bit without busting the wallet.

So you have a Wi-Fi Smart Plug (DSP-W215, Rs. 3,749) and a Wi-Fi Motion Sensor (DCH-S150, Rs. 3,749) that can add smarts to your existing home. Making the approach affordable is all very well, but are they products worthy of your home?

Tushar also checks out the Philips Hue lighting solutions for homes. Philips, with its Hue lighting system, is without a doubt the first name you’d think of for smart home lighting. The premise is simple – you pick up the Hue Starter Kit for Rs. 16,995, which gives you three smart bulbs along with the necessary bridge that allows you to control them – and download the companion app on your mobile, and you’re all set.

When you’re ready to expand the system, you can add a bulb for Rs. 3,995, or pick up the portable Go light (Rs. 8,995), the Bloom ambient light (Rs. 6,750) or the Beyond ceiling/table lamps (Rs.38,995).

That’s a lot of cash for incredibly cool smart lighting but is it worth it? Read about it here.
