Tata Motors-owned Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) will return to the world of motor racing by taking part in the 2016 Formula E championship as an independent team.
Formula E is the world’s first single-seater championship for electric-powered cars and the company plans to use it as a test bed for future electric cars that will be made for everyday use.
The name of the team and the list of drivers will be released in mid-2016. According to Nick Rogers, engineering director of Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), “The future is about being more connected and more sustainable”.
Jaguar has previously taken part in Formula 1 championships between 2000 and 2004. The racing history of JLR goes back to the 1950s and 1980s when the brand took part in 24-hour Le Mans races.
JLR is being supported by Williams Advanced Engineering, which is a well-known name among engineering firms in the Formula One circuit and will be the auto major’s technical partner in the coming Formula E championship.
