- The Sports Ministry has said that medal winners for the 2016 Rio Olympics will be considered for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna and Arjuna Awards, to ensure that Olympic medallists do not wait a year for recognition.
- Previous medal winners for individual and team events who have not been conferred with awards before will be considered for both awards, which honour individual and team achievements.
- According to current provisions of both awards, the achievements of sport-persons from 2011 to 2015 will be considered.
