1. India Collapse to 291/9 vs NZ After Solid Start in 500th Test

India frittered away a solid start as a middle-order collapse saw them reduced to 291 for 9 on the opening day of the first Test against New Zealand despite half-centuries from Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara at Kanpur on Thursday, according to PTI.

After electing to bat in the historic 500th Test, India were comfortably placed at 154/1 riding on a 112-run second wicket stand between Vijay (65) and Pujara (62).

However, a disciplined bowling effort complemented by some inept shot selection by the middle and lower order batsmen saw eight wickets fall in the second and third sessions.

While left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner (3/77) rocked the top-order, it was Boult who looked menacing with the second new ball finishing with figures of 3/57 in 17 overs. He picked all his wickets during the last 10 overs of the day.

Ravindra Jadeja and Umesh Yadav will resume India’s innings on Friday.

Rio Olympics quarterfinalist K Srikanth emerged as the lone Indian survivor at the Japan Open after he reached the last eight stage of the men’s singles competition at the Super Series event at Tokyo on Thursday, according to PTI.

However, it wasn’t the sort of victory that Srikanth would have ever wished for as his match against compatriot Ajay Jayaram was stopped midway after the 28-year-old Mumbai-based shuttler injured his left ankle.

Jayaram retired following the end of the opening game, which went in favour of Srikanth 21-16.

5. A Few of Us Got Out to Loose Shots: Vijay

Opener Murali Vijay admitted that Indian batsmen were guilty of playing loose shots to let go the advantage in the first Test against New Zealand but asserted that the hosts have put up a good total to make a game out of it, according to PTI.

We got out to loose shots as well and the wicket was deteriorating as well, so we really got to be patient on this wicket. It’s a lesson learnt and hopefully we can put up a better show in the second innings.
