The Siri Fort Sports complex in New Delhi saw a replay of the Rio Olympics women’s title showdown on 2 April, albeit with a different result.

Silver medallist PV Sindhu beat her Rio nemesis, Carolina Marin of Spain, 21-19, 21-16 to win her maiden India Open Super Series title.

The third-seeded Indian, who dominated the match from the start to win the summit clash in just 46 minutes, said that winning the hard-fought first game turned out to a be crucial step.

Sindhu also said that it felt nice to see the home crowd cheer wildly for both players.

Top seed Marin said that the match had helped her regain confidence, after the injury she sustained since her performance at Rio.
