Indian hockey star and former skipper Sardar Singh was announced as one of two players recommended to receive this year’s Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, the country’s highest sporting honour.

The other sportsperson was Devendra Jhajharia, a two-time Paralympic gold medallist in javelin throw.

While the achievements of Jhajharia cannot simply be argued, there are a few questions being raised over Sardar’s name being put forward. Specially at a time when the Indian women’s team did the country proud at the ICC World Cup just last month.

So, why no mention on Mithali Raj?

Doesn't the Indian women’s captain, who led the team to two World Cup finals, deserve the Khel Ratna ahead of Sardar? What has Sardar done to deserve the award anyway?
