National-level hockey player Jyoti Gupta's body was found on a railway track in Rewari, Haryana late on 3 August.

She had "suddenly appeared" on the tracks when the Chandigar-Jaipur Intercity Express was running, Times of India reported, and the driver couldn't pull the brakes in time to save her.

Although Jyoti's death is being viewed as a suicide, her family suspect foul play.

Babli, Jyoti's mother told The Indian Express:

Police say it is a suicide. In that case, we need to find out the reason. But there is a missing link somewhere. This isn’t as clear-cut as it looks. Someone’s responsible for my daughter’s death.

But Revari police said CCTV footage showed that Jyoti was alone at the railway station. Further investigation is currently being carried out.

Babli said that Jyoti had to report for the national camp at the Sports Authority of India on Saturday.

She carried her mobile phone, portable charger and the mark-sheet in a small bag and said she would be back by dinner-time.

Reena, Jyoti's neighbour, who reportedly inspired Jyoti at the age of seven to join a local academym says that Jyoti was a mischievous child and a very talented player.

Gupta was a striker in the hockey team and had recently attended a three-month national training camp at Shilaroo, Himachal Pradesh, ahead of July’s World Hockey League Semifinals in Johannesburg.
