Indian women’s cricket captain Mithali Raj has drawn cheers for her befitting response to a journalist who asked her to name her favourite male cricketer.
At the opening dinner and media roundtable event for the Women’s Cricket World Cup, Raj was asked to name her favourite male cricketer from among the India and Pakistan teams. She said:
Do you ask the same question to a male cricketer? Do you ask them who their favourite female cricketer is? I have always been asked who’s your favourite cricketer but you should ask them who their favourite female cricketer is.
According to a report by ESPN, Raj also pointed out the hypocrisy of Indian cricket aficionados. “They love to watch the men play but turn off the television screens when the women are playing,” she lamented.
Indian women cricketers do not receive the same amount of publicity as their male counterparts, she was quoted as saying. However, Raj said she was positive about the BCCI’s new policies to broadcast at least two home series on Indian TV.
