21 June will mark the summer solstice, that day of the year with the longest daylight period – about 17 hours.
The name is derived from the Latin word, solstitium, which means “sun stands still”. It marks the shortening of days in the northern hemisphere.
But this year is different. The solstice will coincide with a full moon – called the strawberry moon. It occurs in June, and marks the beginning of the strawberry picking season in the West.
