The Pakistan army elite has given an ultimatum to the Nawaz Sharif government at the corps commanders’ meeting on 14 October.

The army blames the PMO for leaking information to Cyril Almeida, a senior Dawn journalist, and dismissed his story as "false and fabricated" and a breach of national security.

What’s ironic is that a "false and fabricated" story could lead to breach of national security. Still wondering?

The Pakistan Prime Minister has five days to find out the source who gave Almeida the crucial information. The information in Almeida’s story gave out minute-by-minute details of the meeting that took place on October 3.

He was promptly put on the Exit Control List by the Pakistani authorities, which bars him from leaving the country, but was later taken off the list. Why Nawaz Sharif did that? Still wondering...

The report highlight major differences between the civil and military leadership over issues dealing with terrorism.

It’s believed that Nawaz Sharif himself leaked the information to show the Army in a bad light and himself and his brother as heroes.

The love-hate relationship between the Sharif brothers and the military goes way back when, after the success of Zard-e-Azb, the military offensive against the Taliban in North Waziristan, the army was keen to move to Punjab. Incidentally, Nawaz Sharif’s brother Shahbaz is the Chief Minister of Punjab province.

What makes life more difficult for Nawaz Sharif than it already is, is that his family is under the Panama leaks cloud. And how can we forget Imran Khan? The former cricketer is threatening to hold a massive dharna from 30 October.

Meanwhile, a proposal to elevate Pakistan's Army chief General Raheel Sharif to the rank of Field Marshal has reached the Islamabad High Court, weeks ahead of his retirement from the powerful post.

A lawyer has sought the high court’s help to elevate General Raheel, 60, to the rank of Field Marshal in the greater national interest by taking into consideration his “exemplary services and sacrifices rendered for the nation”.

The counsel said that the army chief should be promoted to the rank of Field Marshal for rendering services to protect national security and safeguarding the frontiers of Pakistan in accordance with the National Action Plan (NAP) and for successful completion of the anti-terror campaign 'Zarb-e- Azab' in an effective and efficient manner.

General Sharif had earlier promised to bow out at the end of his term in November this year.
