A mother has been arrested after North Carolina police alleged she left her young children home alone for hours and never picked up her kindergarten student at a school bus stop. Both are crimes punishable under law.

Media outlets report arrest warrants show 29-year-old Sarai F Lechuga of Raleigh is facing four counts of child abuse.

Wake County Public Schools officials say they tried for hours to contact Lechuga on Tuesday afternoon after she didn’t show up to get her 5-year-old son off the bus.

Under school district policy, a bus driver cannot leave a child in pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and first grade at a bus stop if a parent or guardian isn’t there.

Police eventually found Lechuga and discovered that her three other children, aged eight, three and one, were left unsupervised at home for more than six hours that day.
