Ivanka Trump and former US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley are reportedly among a few US candidates being considered to assume the role of the new President of the World Bank, replacing outgoing President Jim Yong Kim.
Kim, on Monday, 7 January, had suddenly announced that he would be cutting short his tenure as the World Bank President, three years before his term was due to end, The New Indian Express, quoting The Financial Times, reported.
Other than Trump and Haley, names of other possible candidates which were being floated around, are David Malpass, Treasury Undersecretary for International Affairs and Mark Green, head of the US Agency for International Development, the report added.
Ivanka being considered as a candidate for the role comes after she was successful in promoting a $1 billion, Saudi-supported World Bank fund which was aimed at promoting entrepreneurship by women.
Speaking to Financial Times, a spokesperson from the World Bank said:
“We are beginning the internal review process for a US nominee. We look forward to working with the governors to select a new leader.”
Adding to this, The World Bank Board on Thursday, 10 January, said that it would start accepting nominations for a new President by early February and name a replacement for Kim by around mid-April, the report added.
