US Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has named a well known Indian American civil rights lawyer to lead her team of senior policy advisers for the campaign agenda. Clinton is making her second presidential run.
Impressive Credentials
46-year-old Maya Harris is a law professor who has served as a Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress. She was also the Vice President of Democracy, Rights and Justice and an officer of the Board of Trustees at the Ford Foundation. Harris has published commentaries in several media outlets.
Maya received her bachelor’s degree from the University of California at Berkeley and graduated with distinction from Stanford Law School. At 29, she was recruited to serve as Dean and Chief Executive Officer at Lincoln Law School of San Jose – becoming one of the country’s youngest law school deans.
Maya’s Indian Connect
Maya’s mother, Shyamala Gopalan Harris – a cancer researcher – came to the US from Chennai in 1960. Her father is from Jamaica. Incidentally, Hillary’s latest campaign agenda leader is the younger sister of California Senate candidate Kamala Harris.
Maya is married to Tony West – who served as associate attorney general in the Obama administration for five years till September 2014.
