With Assam hit by protests over the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB), Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter on Thursday, 12 December, to assure the people of the state that “they have nothing to worry after the passing of CAB.”
“The Central Government and I are totally committed to constitutionally safeguard the political, linguistic, cultural and land rights of the Assamese people as per the spirit of Clause 6,” his said.

Modi’s comments come on a day when people defied curfew in Guwahati in the morning to protest against the Bill as the situation remained tense throughout Assam, with the Army conducting a flag march in the city, reported PTI.
Guwahati, the epicentre of anti-CAB protests, was placed under indefinite curfew on Wednesday night.
Vehicles were stranded in various cities of Assam due to heavy blockade. Half-a dozen vehicles were burnt. The houses of BJP and AGP leaders were attacked in various parts of the state.
Ranji Trophy matches in Assam as well as Tripura were also suspended due to protests and curfew over the Bill, the BCCI said.
After being cleared by the Lok Sabha on Monday, the Bill was passed in Rajya Sabha with 125 ‘Ayes’ and 99 ‘Noes’ on Wednesday.
