Indian officials said that India is ready to discuss human rights issues with the US, but will not accept any kind of judgmental pronouncements.

This comes a day after Senator Ben Cardin sharply criticised India on alleged human rights violations, extra-judicial killings and religious intolerance.

In recent communication with US lawmakers and the Obama administration, Indian officials acknowledged that India is not a perfect society and has issues of social justice and human rights within the country, but also an equally strong voice against such injustices.

Officials said they would discuss these issues with the US on the basis of equality and partnership

Cardin, who is a ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, made a specific reference to India’s anti-conversion laws and said these had been framed long ago but were being used in some parts of India to infringe on people’s right to religious freedom.

He also alleged that there were extra-judicial killings in India that must not be allowed to continue.
