The Kerala police on Thursday arrested eight youth Congress workers in Kannur, including the Parliamentary Constituency President Rijil Makutty, for killing an ox last week.

A group of youth Congress workers had organised the public slaughter of an ox to protest the Centre’s decision to impose new restrictions on the trade of cattle for the purpose of slaughtering.

We admit it was a big mistake. And we are ready to suffer for it. But at the same time, people should be aware of those who lynch poor in the name of keeping beef and execute their opponents in broad daylight.
Rijil Makutty to Hindustan Times last week

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi took to Twitter to condemn the incident and called the act “thoughtless and barbaric.”

Kannur is a district in North Kerala, popular for the recurring high-voltage violence between CPI(M) and the RSS.
