A debate is raging within the BJP over the party’s chief ministerial candidate for Uttar Pradesh (UP) with a large section of the cadre rooting for Varun Gandhi, while another section opposing him, The Deccan Chronicle reports.

Those in support of him are claiming that this would not only lessen the effect of Priyanka and Rahul Gandhi but also be a counter to Samajwadi Party’s Akhilesh Yadav.

Varun Gandhi met other senior party leaders on Tuesday night to discuss the situation in Uttar Pradesh. Hardliners in the party oppose Mr Gandhi as they feel he is a bit too secular and left-of-centre line.

The cadre supporting him says that he has the perfect blend of hindutva and nationalism.
