Bodies of two teenage sisters were found hanging from a tree near Dhumnadipur in the Sambhal district of Uttar Pradesh on Sunday, 6 January. The case has come under the Gunnaur police station jurisdiction.

"Family members of the deceased – Kavita, 18, and Seema, 19 – said both the girls had gone out of their house yesterday, and on returning were scolded by their mother. They went missing at night," Gunnaur Circle Officer Gamleshwar Biltoriya said.

The family, according to police, said the girls might have taken the step as they were reportedly scolded over some domestic work. The bodies were found by the father, who woke up in the morning and saw them hanging near the house.

The girls had not been attending any school and used to help in domestic work, according to police.

According to The Times of India, Gunnaur SHO Ata Mohammad said the girls' family told them that they were scolded on Saturday because they had forgotten to fodder the cattle.

CO Biltroya, meanwhile, told TOI that they had learned that the girls' marriages had been fixed in another village.

"We are investigating all angles," he said.

Mohammad said the bodies have been brought for autopsy and the cause will be clear once the post-mortem report is out.
