Shyam Bahadhur Tamang was 15 years-old when an earthquake measuring 8.0 on the Richter Scale struck Nepal-Bihar. At 96, his memory of the 1934 earthquake is dim. He remembers the earth shuddering, the aftershocks and the fear. But he doesn’t remember the earthquake causing this much damage.

Shyam Bahadur is also hoping that one of the medical camps in his remote village of Yasha in the Rasuwa region, will even help correct his cataract.

An Earthquake Every 80 Years

The 1934 earthquake killed 17,000 people in Nepal and Bihar. Most of the casualties were in the Kathmandu Valley. A fourth of the houses in the Nepalese capital were reportedly destroyed. Historically, this region has experienced a big temblor every 75 to 80 years.

Shashank and Karan who sent us these pictures of Shyam Bahadur Tamang hope the government does a little more and help people build quake-resistant homes.
