SC Asks Govt to Introduce Harsher Punishment for Rash Driving

The Supreme Court said the existing two-year imprisonment for rash and negligent driving was inadequate.

  • The Supreme Court asked the central government on Tuesday to amend laws to introduce harsher punishments for rash and negligent driving.
  • The apex court bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra asserted that a stringent law to curb widespread road deaths was the need of the hour. “People were losing their lives and limbs in road accidents. There should be a fear of the law," the bench added.
  • Expressing concern about the problem of rash and negligent driving, which claims nearly 400 lives on Indian roads every day, the Supreme Court said the existing two-year imprisonment for the offence was inadequate.
