BS Yeddyurappa was sworn in as the state’s new chief minister on Thursday, 17 May, hours after the Supreme Court, in a rare midnight hearing, refused to stay the ceremony.

A bench of Justices AK Sikri, SA Bobde and Ashok Bhushan was specially convened at "odd hours" to hear the petition filed by the Congress-JD(S) combine to challenge Governor Vajubhai Vala's decision to invite the BJP to form the government in the state despite failing to cross the halfway mark.
