1. Romanian Arrested from Delhi for ATM Card Fraud in Kolkata

A Romanian was arrested on Monday, 10 December, by a Kolkata Police team from New Delhi's Greater Kailash I area for his alleged involvement in recent cases of ATM/Debit card fraud in the eastern metropolis, a senior officer said.

Siliviu Florin Spiridon (28), a resident of Constanta in Romania, was arrested by a team of the detective department of Kolkata Police, he said.

A number of accessories like pinhole camera chips which are kept inside ATMs, skimming devices, magnetic chips, batteries and several documents were seized from him, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) of Kolkata Police Murlidhar Sharma told PTI.

2. Mamata Prod, Fresh Stock From Nashik Likely to Pull Price of Onion Down Soon

Ten onion-laden trucks, seven of them from Nashik, arrived at Koley Market on Monday. During a surprise visit to Jadubabu’s Bazar, CM Mamata Banerjee expressed her anger at the astronomical rise in onion price and hinted at strong action against hoarding.

The network for sale of subsidized onion has widened significantly as ration shops have started selling the vegetable. Consumers are expected the reap the benefit as onion prices are likely to drop due to the combined effect of these developments.

The price has already started to dip in the wholesale price from Rs 4,200 per 40 kg on Saturday-Sunday to Rs 3,400 per bag on Monday. “The new crop, which is highly perishable, is bound to pull down the retail price. If the wholesale onion price is Rs 85, its retail price should not exceed Rs 100,” said Kamal De, president of the West Bengal Vendors’ Association.

3. North, Central Kolkata and Salt Lake to Go Dry on 14 Dec

Entire north and central Kolkata and some parts of south will go dry on December 14 owing to an urgent repair work of water valves at the Tallah water reservoir. Some areas in Salt Lake and under South Dum Dum municipality won’t get water as well.

According to a KMC water supply department official, there would be no supply of filtered water from Tallah as the engineers will conduct a major overhaul of the high-diameter valves, some of which have developed cracks and started malfunctioning.

4. Four Held for Trying to Blackmail, Extort money from Kashmiri Doctor in Kolkata

Four persons have been arrested here for allegedly trying to blackmail and extort money from a Kashmiri doctor practising in the city, a senior police officer said on Monday.

He said the doctor on Friday received a call from a Dumdum-based woman who complained of severe chest pain and requested him to visit her residence.

After reaching the woman's house, the doctor started checking her previous prescriptions but she suddenly embraced him, the officer said.

5. Cops Bust Sex Shops in Posh Pockets; Nab 30 Managers, Pimps, Customers

Thirty men, including brothel managers, pimps and customers, were arrested from four upper middle-class neighbourhoods in south Kolkata during successive raids late on Sunday night. The raids were conducted by the anti-human trafficking unit (AHTU) of detective department.

With these arrests, it is now officially confirmed that sex trade has been growing outside the red-light areas of Kolkata and gradually moving to neighbourhoods that attract least attention.

Cops and NGO workers claimed that most sex workers hail from extremely poor background and almost all were tricked into joining the profession. They are paid Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 as monthly salary.
