1. HC Ruling on Jayalalithaa Statue
The Madras High Court on Monday ordered that the statue of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa proposed to be installed at the Kancheepuram Municipality office would be subject to the result of a PIL petition filed by an activist.
Justice M Sathyanarayanan and Justice N Seshasayee passed the order on a petition filed by K Gothandan. He had assailed the installation on several grounds, including his claim that she was a convict in a corruption case and, therefore, her statue could not be installed in a public office.

2. Cow Run Over by Train, Suburban Services Hit
Nearly 8 suburban trains were affected between Perambur and Vyasarpadi after a cow was run over by a train on Tuesday evening.
According to a Southern Railway official, around 4 pm, the guard of a suburban train plying between Pattabiram and Madras Moore Market Complex informed railway officials about the incident.

3. Fuel Price Volatility Hits Common Man
Petrol and diesel prices have been on the rise, impacting everyday life. On Tuesday, a litre of petrol cost Rs 71.62 and diesel Rs 60.02. In the last two months, the price of petrol has been steadily climbing. Consumers pay Rs 6.02 per litre more now. Similarly, diesel that was Rs 56.13 on July 1, now sells at Rs 60.02 — making the consumer pay Rs 3.89 more per litre.
Industry watchers said that the prices, however, have been fluctuating. On August 13, petrol touched Rs 70.19 a litre and diesel Rs 60.16.

4. ‘AIADMK Will Collapse By Itself’
With the Edappadi K Palaniswami government reduced to a minority, the Congress and the DMK are demanding a floor test.
On Tuesday, TNCC president Su Thirunavukkarasar used a personal meeting with Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao to remind him of the opposition’s memorandum on this. But he is not keen on moving or co-piloting a no-confidence motion. He says the AIADMK government will collapse on its own.

5. IIT-M Raises Rs 55 Crore
The Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-M) has raised a record Rs 55 crore for the financial year 2016-2017, recording a 70% increase in new donors over the preceding year.
From merely 36 donors in 2001-04, the institute has managed to collect money from 1,827 donors in 2016, institute officials said. IIT-M, which has set a goal of raising Rs 500 crore by 2020, has received the most money from alumni. Families of alumni who have since passed away, have also sponsored merit scholarships, officials said.

6. Govt Staff to Go on Strike From September 7
Members of the Joint Action Council of Tamil Nadu Teachers Organisations and Government Employees Organisations (JACTTO-GEO) have announced an indefinite strike from September 7.
They had been demanding the implementation of the Seventh Pay Commission’s recommendations and had also sought that the old pension scheme be brought back.

7. Fresh Case Booked Against Nanjil Sampath
Nanjil Sampath, propaganda secretary of AIAMDK (Amma), found himself in the middle of high drama on Monday as his residence in Pattinampakkam came under attack by the BJP cadre, who also gheraoed him later at a hotel.
Trouble has been brewing for some time with BJP workers taking offence to some of the comments made by Mr Sampath, who has been highly critical of both BJP leaders and factions within AIADMK opposed to TTV Dhinakaran.
