1. SIT Seeks Custody of Cartridges Recovered in Kalburgi Case

While it has been established that 7.65 mm cartridges – also used in the murders of MM Kalburgi and Govind Pansare – were recovered from the verandah of journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh’s house where she was shot dead on 5 September, the police have yet to conclusively prove that the same murder weapon was used in all the three cases. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) that is probing Lankesh’s death have now sought the court’s permission to get the cartridges recovered in the Kalburgi case.

“When we get the evidence, the FSL will be able to conclusively show whether the same weapon was used, putting all other theories to rest. It has already been proved that the same country-made pistol was used to kill Kalburgi and Pansare,” said an official of the SIT team. Investigators have already established that a country-made weapon was used to kill Lankesh.

As part of their probe into possible motives beyond political ideology to be the reason for journalist Gauri Lankesh’s murder, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) has reportedly identified some criminals with a history of violent crimes lurking close to her home in Rajarajeswari Nagar and nearby areas.

Police have identified a few associates of Kunigal Giri from CCTV footage collected from Rajarajeswari Nagar especially localities near Gauri’s residence. Though a team of officers within the SIT is probing the link between Gauri’s murder and the killing of three other rationalists including Kalburgi, another cluster of officials is probing the possible involvement of supari killers hired to eliminate her due to any fallout from past financial or personal deals.
