Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra, on Wednesday, 3 October, announced that she would be investing in dating and social media app, Bumble and will help its launch in India in the coming months. This will be her second investment in a tech company, besides a coding education company called Holberton School.
Chopra was one of the high-profile women who had helped Bumble to kickstart its networking app, Bumble Bizz, in October 2017, reported CNN.
The dating app which has been founded by Whitney Wolfe Herd, a prominent name in the start-up sector, requires women to make the first move.
Herd, in an email to CNN, said Priyanka had told her months ago that “Indian women needed Bumble”.
“It was clear then we shared a passion for empowering young women on a global level. From there we began architecting a plan to partner and launch Bumble in India.”Wolfe Herd told CNN in an e-mail
Herd told CNN that Priyanka could help Bumble localise the experience and attract women in Indian market.
Bumble will launch in India by the end of the year in both Hindi and Hinglish – a mix of Hindi and English – and will be available on iOS and Android. The app will also roll out a safety feature for women before entering the market.
The app, Herd told CNN, will need Indian women to only fill in the first initial of their name and not their full names. The dating app will also ensure ways to report “bad behavior”.
Bumble, which already operates in 160 countries, has photo verification features and more than 4000 content moderators who review photos and profile, reported CNN.
