Jaslok Nursing Student Hangs Self In Hostel Bathroom

A 24-year-old nursing student at the Jaslok hospital allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the shower pipe of a bathroom in the college hostel on Saturday morning. Batchmates of the woman, identified as Narayani Avasthi, told Mirror that of late, she had been complaining of “continued harassment” by a few college seniors. While the hospital management denied the allegation, college principal, Mangalam, said the victim, who is a third year BSc (Nursing) student, may have been “under pressure because of her poor academic record”. “She has mentioned some past incident in her suicide note. At this point, we can’t reveal anything more,” said Pravin Padwal, additional commissioner of police (south).

According to sources, Avasthi had worked double shift on August 29, the day when the city was hit by torrential rains. On Saturday, her seniors had asked her to visit a doctor as she was sick. “When one of her colleagues came for taking her to the warden, Avasthi went inside the bathroom and did not return. Suspecting something wrong when Avasthi refused to open the bathroom door despite repeated knocking on the door, the student informed the others.

“When one of the hostel employees broke open the bathroom door, Avasthi was found to have hanged from the shower using a rope. It seems she hanged herself any time between 7 am and 9 am. We have registered an accidental death report for now. Investigation is on,” said a police officer attached to the Gamdevi police station.

The Mumbai-Delhi Rajdhani Express and August Kranti Rajdhani Express were held up for over an hour and close to an hour, respectively, at different stations on Saturday, after the catering staff of both the premier refused to work in protest against what they said continuing harassment by the RPF and the GRP. According to the pantry car workers, the railway’s security enforcement agencies had put them under the scanner after the August Kranti Rajdhani Express robbery last month and were routinely summoning them for questioning.

On Saturday, around eight workers were detained, they claimed, adding that this was the last straw. As over 30 catering staffers protested and refused to board the trains, the Mumbai-Delhi Rajdhani was held up for 30 minutes at Mumbai Central and 35 minutes at Borivli stations, said a spokesperson of Western Railway. The August Kranti Rajdhani Express was held up for around 55 minutes — 35 minutes at Mumbai Central and 20 minutes at Borivli stations. “After the theft case, the GRP and RPF started harassing us.

A day before Prime Minister Narendra Modi reshuffles his council of ministers, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray said, on Saturday, that he hasn't asked for any additional berths in the union team of ministers.

"Neither have I asked them nor have they told me anything about it. I learnt about the reshuffle through media reports," he told media persons after a meeting with party corporators, legislators and MPs at Rangsharda Auditorium in Bandra.

"I'm not power hungry. And, frankly, I'm confused as to whether we should come under the BJP's spell, especially when I'm reading reports about Nana Patole (BJP's estranged MP) everywhere," he said, while taking potshots at the internal bickering in the BJP.

Patole, who represents Bhandara in the Lok Sabha, has been ranting against Modi and has criticised the PM for not being able to answer uncomfortable questions. He said that the PM lost his cool whenever a query was posed to him. He has also slammed Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, alleging that the CM was unable to seek funds from the Centre. It seems Patole has made up his mind to quit the BJP ahead of the next Lok Sabha polls. Earlier, he was a Congress legislator.

South Mumbai Residents Win Back Children's Park From BMC

For around 10,000 residents of this uber-plush locality holding some of Mumbai's costliest real estate, this was the last remaining open space in the neighbourhood. Captain Ashok Batra, chairman, Altamount Road Residents' Association, said that the plot was reserved as a children's park for 25 years but the BMC failed to acquire the plot from its owner.

"The BMC back in 2007 started the process of acquisition. But when the time came to pay the owner, they did not complete the transaction which had to be done within the timeframe permissible, which is ten years from the date of a plot being reserved. The corporation failed to pay Rs 10 lakh compensation to acquire the plot. As a result of which this particular party took up the matter to the Supreme Court and got the reservation lifted," Batra said.

When the new DP was formulated, it did not have the plot marked as a Children's Park. That's when the residents decided to do something about it. Among those pitching in to save the plot - located on Byramji Gamadia Road, near the Japanese Consulate -- was actor Suniel Shetty, a resident of Altamount Road. "This re-reservation by the BMC is the best thing that could have happened to Altamount Road. It is one of the few roads which is preserved from the green perspective. Our children have no other open space to play here. Residents deserve all the credit," he said.
