1993 Serial Blasts Case: Convict Pleads For Mercy Citing Age and Ailments

Citing the age and responsibilities of the accused, the defence, in the last leg of the 1993 bomb blasts case argued that convict Taher Merchant, should not be given the death penalty. Merchant has been found guilty by the Special TADA court of harbouring men who were sent to Pakistan for training, two months before the blasts took place.

Lawyer Sudeep Pasbola arguing on behalf of Merchant (61), said that he was a senior citizen, suffered from several ailments, has a young daughter to be married off, and therefore should not be given the death penalty despite the prosecution’s demands. “A senior citizen cannot be a threat to society,” Pasbola said.

Kanjurmarg Plot Will Now Be Used for Metro-VI Project

The 41-hectare Kanjurmarg salt pan land, which was first identified for the Colaba-SEEPZ Metro-III car shed, will now be used for Metro-VI.This elevated metro line is from Swami Samarth Nagar (Lokhandwala, Andheri West) via Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road to Kanjurmarg. While activists were keen the Metro-III car shed be shifted to Kanjurmarg to save Aarey’s green cover, it will remain at Aarey.

In 2015, following large scale protests against the construction of a metro car shed at Aarey, the state government had set up a committee to look for alternative sites for a metro car shed. "The committee's first choice was Kanjurmarg," said metropolitan commissioner U PS Madan. The 41-hectares, though not disputed, is part of a single survey number comprising 200 hectares which is disputed and there is a order of the Bombay High Court to maintain status quo since 1997.

Eighteen students have been barred from five attempts at the HSC examination for forwarding images of question papers using WhatsApp during the boards in March 2017. They now get a shot at the exam only in 2020.

The Mumbai division of the Maharashtra State Board took the decision as four HSC papers had gone viral before the tests started this year. Last year, three HSC students had faced the same punishment. "We have strengthened the examina ion system by setting up vigi ance squads which keep an eye on malpractices, but students seem to be getting very nnovative in the ways they cheat. Use of social media for cheating is something that he board cannot control but we can at least punish those ndulging in these malpractices," said Dattatray Jagtap, chairperson of the board's Mumbai division.
