Five construction workers were killed and seven suffered severe burns in a blaze at a highrise coming up in Juhu late on Wednesday night.

At least four people were reported missing after the fire at 13-storey Prarthana apartment building. The flames erupted on the ground floor and spread to the first floor. The two levels had makeshift labour camps, where many workers were asleep.

The fire brigade, which received the first call at 10.10 pm, deployed three fire engines, two water tankers, and a turntable ladder. The flames were put out by 10.35 pm, said chief fire officer Prabhat Rahangdale.

2. Cops Seek Rs 14 Cr In Bomb Suits Row

Five years after the state police filed a case against Mumbai based Techno Trade Impex India Pvt Ltd for allegedly supplying inferior quality bomb suits, the police department has demanded the firm refund it to the tune of Rs 14 crore.

The Maharashtra Police told the Bombay High Court, which is hearing the case against Techno Trade, that the amount includes an annual interest of 18%.

A senior police officer said recovery through court was the only option left before the department. “The state government made an advance payment of Rs 6.2 crore for the bomb suits. The company has refused to refund the money even though it was brought to its notice that the protective gear it provided was of substandard quality,” the officer said.

3. Centre, State Ask Rlys To Review Stand On Bullet Train Terminus Site

The Centre and the Maharashtra government have asked the railways to review its stand and consider alternate sites for the Mumbai terminal of Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train. The railways has been seeking a plot in the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) for the terminus, but the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and the state government insist they can’t afford to spare the prime piece of land.

Moreover, the state government says it plans to use the land for the proposed International Financial Services Centre (IFSC).

Poonam Mahajan, BJP MP, who is also vice chairperson of the task force set up to develop IFSC, said, “The railways ministry and MMRDA are in touch. They must have considered different locations. I am sure that they will find locations beneficial for both IFSC and bullet train.’’
