1. Police Dept To Take Over Part Of Azad Maidan

After the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) was given nearly ten lakh square feet of the Azad Maidan for the Metro Line III project, the Mumbai Police has requested ownership of 10,000 sq feet of the Azad Maidan near Hazarimal Somani Marg.

“We need a big space for protests to be held so as to avoid stampedes. Since the 4,000-sq feet space we had at the entrance of Azad Maidan near BMC will be required for the Metro, we have asked for the space near Hazarimal Somani Marg,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Manoj Sharma of Zone 1.

Last week, the Bombay high court, which is hearing petitions by south Mumbai residents against cutting of trees for the SEEPZ-Colaba underground Metro, asked the complainants to be ‘pragmatic’. “FW Stevens? I think he was a corporator…” says Krishna Kumar, who runs a general store on Stevens Street, Colaba. This modest street, perpendicular to the much grander Lansdowne Road, does not seem very aware of the importance of the person it was named after — FW Stevens, the man who gave Bombay it’s most iconic edifice, Victoria Terminus.

“He was one of Bombay’s foremost architects, having designed buildings such as the Police Headquarters in Colaba, the BMC building in Fort and the Western Railway Head Office at Churchgate,” says conservation architect Abha Narain Lambah. Although born in Bath in the United Kingdom in 1847, Stevens was a Bombay man; having worked most of his life in the city. His final resting place is at the Sewri Cemetery.
