AAP’s Tilak Nagar MLA Jarnail Singh has been booked by police for allegedly assaulting an MCD engineer and preventing him from carrying out his duty when the latter and his team had gone to demolish an illegal construction in west Delhi.

Singh was previously a journalist – before joining AAP and contesting Delhi Assembly elections in 2015 from Tilak Nagar constituency.

The former journalist had come into the limelight when he hurled a shoe at the then Home Minister, P Chidambaram at a press conference in 2009. Singh had repeatedly questioned the minister regarding the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) “clean chit” to Congress leader, Jagdish Tytler in connection with the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Chidambaram’s refusal to answer his questions had provoked the infamous shoe-throwing incident.

The Fresh Incident

Azhar Mustafa, the SDMC junior engineer who was thrashed by Jarnail Singh has lodged a complaint against the MLA, following which an FIR has also been registered.

Mustafa in his complaint said that he along with his team had reached Krishna Park area to demolish an illegal construction when the locals objected to it and called local MLA Jarnail Singh to the spot. The junior engineer has accused Singh and several of his associates of obstructing him and his team from carrying out the demolition and thrashing him.

Mustafa has claimed that when Singh was shown documents authorising the demolition, Singh tore them up.

“On the basis of the complaint, we have registered an FIR under IPC sections 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of duty) and 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) at Tilak Nagar Police station against Singh. Further investigations are on,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Pushpendra Kumar.

No Notice To Owner, says Jarnail

Jarnail Singh, on the other hand, has rejected the claims made by Mustafa, arguing that no notice was ever served to the owner of the property.

Singh also said that he will file a counter complaint against the engineer.

DCP (West) Pushpendra Kumar, however, clarified that he had seen no such developments. “We have not received any counter complaint in this regard from Singh so far,” said Kumar.
