1. Chit Fund Scams: CBI Questions Partha, Kolkata Ex-Top Cop Rajeev Kumar

The CBI on Friday, 16 August, questioned TMC general secretary and minister Partha Chatterjee and former city police commissioner Rajeev Kumar in connection with Ponzi scheme scams in West Bengal.

A week after TMC MP Derek O’ Brien was summoned by the CBI in connection with Saradha chit fund scam, state education minister Chatterjee appeared before the probe agency at CGO complex in Salt Lake here on Friday, while ADG (Criminal Investigation Department) Kumar, was examined in Rose Valley scam.

2. Roopa Ganguly’s Son in Police Custody for Rash Driving

Actor-turned-BJP Rajya Sabha MP Roopa Ganguly’s son, Akash Mukhopadhyay, was sent to one-day police custody on Friday, after he allegedly rammed into a wall of an upscale south Kolkata club on Thursday night, sources said. No casualty or injury has been reported.

The order came after the police produced Akash, 21, before the Alipur court, sources said. “Akash has been arrested on charges of rash driving,” said senior police official.

3. Job Hope in Micro Units in Bengal

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee on Friday inaugurated and laid foundation stones of nine industrial parks for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Howrah, declaring the projects would generate nearly two lakh jobs.

“A total of Rs 13,000 crore would be invested in these parks and two lakh employment opportunities would be created. When the country is facing a recession, we should focus on issues like this as it will give the younger generation a direction,” the chief minister said at a time of layoffs in several sectors of the economy.

4. Bengal Ache Over Rural Job Scheme Tweak

Panchayat authorities in Bengal are worried about meeting man-day targets under the centrally funded 100-day job scheme after the Union government recently struck off the list some activities that generated maximum employment in the state.

In a circular issued in July, the Centre informed states that certain activities like digging earth, developing gravel roads and renovating ponds would no longer be considered part of the MGNREGA scheme.

5. Cab Hits 3, Rams Into Sector V Shop

An app cab headed towards Mahisbathan behind Sector V hit a bicyclist and two women, who were standing on the pavement, before ramming into a roadside kiosk on Ring Road late on Thursday, police said.

According to an officer of the Bidhannagar Commissionerate, the cab had picked up passengers from Sector V and was headed towards Mahisbathan. As the car went past several large water bodies along the Ring Road, the driver lost control of the vehicle while taking a turn.
