Tagore Statue Vandalised In Kolkata, TMC Says BJP Supporter Liable

A statue of Rabindranath Tagore was vandalised in Kolkata’s Salt Lake area on Saturday, 9 March.

According to locals, the incident took place around 6.30am on Saturday. Three people were seen hitting the statue of Tagore located in Salt Lake’s Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Island with bricks.

On hearing the commotion when locals landed at the spot, two of the three miscreants fled while one was caught.

The man has been identified as Sujoy Mondal.

Mondal has been arrested by the Bidhannagar (West) Police.

The Trinamool Congress Councillor from the area, Nirmal Datta said:

“Three men vandalised the statue, we caught one of them while other 2 managed to escape. We don’t know why they did it. The one who was caught has been handed over to the police.”

Datta also said that the one caught was a BJP supporter. Meanwhile, the police are on the lookout for the other two accused.
